The Best Black Myth: Wukong Builds Right Now

Are you playing Black Myth: Wukong? It's all everyone on the internet has been talking about for the last few weeks, and the sales numbers back up that impression, with the Chinese game smashing through ten million sales in just a week.

A return to monke is on everyone's minds, and for good reason. Black Myth: Wukong blends the character action genre with a pinch of Dark Souls, and sets it to a background of Chinese myth and legend. The Destined One, the player character, is based off of Sun Wukong of legend, and he inherits all of his inspiration's abilities. Not only does that include a magical staff that extends at will and has three stances to pick from, but also means you the chance to cast magical spells, and shapeshift too. So, versatility is the name of the game here, and that means you have a number of ways to play.

But we've all run into those bosses that make us take a step back and think "okay, how can I really hand it to this guy?" While the game is still new, we've got some big tips for you on three builds you can use to pound your enemies in Black Myth: Wukong.

Rock-hard defense

What's better than all-out attack? A solid defense that doesn't waver against even the most punishing attacks. This build focuses on pushing the Destined One's Defense stat as high as possible, which is then combined with the Dark Iron Staff, to use your Defense stat to boost your attack. Unfortunately, since the Dark Iron Staff isn't available until at least New Game+, the full build is inaccessible for most until the game has been beaten at least once. However, the Jingubang staff works well as a replacement for the meantime.

  • Weapon: Dark Iron Staff/Jingubang/Adept Spine-Shooting Fuban Staff
  • Armor: Bull King's Armor
  • Spirit: Wandering Wight
  • Curios: Gold Spikeplate/Agate Jar/Boshan Censer
  • Gourd: Supreme Gourd
  • Drinks: Monkey Brew

The obvious armor for this build is the Bull King's Armor set, as it offers the highest defense in the basic game, with additional Defense boosts applied whenever you're hit in combat. However, once you've cleared the game a few times, the Fortune's Favor set instead becomes the best option, as it exceeds the Bull King's set by quite a lot.

In terms of other equipment, the key here is to make sure you're choosing equipment that boosts your Defense. That's really all you need to watch out for, so as long as you're boosting that stat, you can't go wrong.

Balance in all things

Balance is a key theme in lots of literature, and that's no different in Black Myth: Wukong. This balanced build represents the best middle ground you can find in the game so far, with a solid balance between attack and defense. If you're the sort of person who doesn't like to place all of their eggs in one basket, then this build will definitely appeal. Unfortunately, this build isn't possible to build until at least Chapter 6 of the game, so if this build is your goal, use the strongest equipment you have until that point.

  • Weapon: Jingubang
  • Armor: Heaven's Equal set
  • Spirit: Apramana Bat/Non-Void/Mother of Flamlings
  • Curios: Agate Jar/Boshan Censer
  • Gourd: Supreme Gourd
  • Drinks: Monkey Brew

The key elements to this build are the Heaven's Equal armor pieces and the Jingubang weapon. The Jingubang is a strong and well balanced weapon in itself, but its most important element is to set off the Heaven's Equal set bonuses, reducing the cooldown between spells, boost Critical Hit Chance, and add a bunch of passive stat bonuses. It makes the build well balanced (as all things should be), giving you a good mid-point between strength, defense, spells, and transformations.

Since this set is the keystone of the build, you're allowed some leeway with how you approach the rest of the build, with soaks and spells largely down to your personal preference. Choose whatever you prefer, and get out there and hit some stuff.

Deathstinger self-poisoning build

This here's a build for the risk-takers. Not only will you be poisoning yourself to boost your attack stat, you'll also be heavily reliant on accurate dodges to avoid taking damage. It's a high risk — high reward approach that's perfect for those who might want to up the difficulty of the game a little bit, but also do oodles of damage into the bargain.

  • Weapon: Jingubang/Tri-Point Double-Edged Spear
  • Armor: Centipede Armor set
  • Spirit: Elder Amourworm
  • Curios: Tiger Tally/Tiger Tendon Belt/White Seashell Waist Chain
  • Gourd: Supreme Gourd
  • Drinks: Monkey Brew/Loong Balm

The central pillar of this set is the Deathstinger soak, as it's the way you can reliably poison yourself. Why do you want to poison yourself? Because you have the full Centipede Armor set on, silly! The set bonuses for the full Centipede Armor set heavily reduce the damage you take from being poisoned, but also massively boost the damage you deal while you're suffering from poison. So you're poisoning yourself to wreak massive damage on enemies, which is a big risk, yes, but also dishes out big rewards if you can pull it off.
