GTA V Online loses trillions in hacker crackdown

If you're fed up of playing Grand Theft Auto online with cheaters who have amassed untold mountains of riches that let them play the game with abandon, without worrying about their stockpile running dry, then never fear, Rockstar is on the case. In its latest attack on scammers and cheaters, Rockstar has removed trillions of dollars of online currency from the game. Not only that, but anyone given a temporary ban in the same breath, will find their inventory, online characters, properties and progress reset to nothing when it's over.

While it's taken Rockstar a long time to pull its finger out and really do something about the large numbers of online players who are happy to cheat their way through the experience. When it finally brought the hammer down though, it didn't mess around.

As PCGamer highlights, Rockstar went after these players like Putin after a Russian oligarch. It stripped players of billions, upon billions of in game cash, sending them scurrying back to their legitimate accounts.

Any money purchased through the game has remained, so if even the hackers paid up at some point, they get to keep that, but when their bans are eventually lifted in the near future, they won't have much else to show for it.

If any of those now temporarily banned commit another infraction, the account will be permanently disabled, forcing them to pay for another copy of the game if they want to play again.
