Roblox hits 100 million users -- more popular than Minecraft

In the neverending battle for the attention of the world's children, game developers and publishers continue to push to be the biggest and most popular game creators the world has ever seen. Minecraft remains near the top of the heap with more than 90 million active users at the last count. But Roblox has now overtaken it, with the developers announcing that they've just passed the 100 million user mark.

Roblox is a free to play game launched in 2006 that targets a younger audience than most games, Minecraft included. It's a third-person game that straddles sandbox and MMO genres with a number of Minecraft-like elements, many of which may have inspired the titular mining and crafting game when it launched just a few years later.

But now it's one of the biggest games in the world, with more users than almost anything that's ever released.

"We started Roblox over a decade ago with a vision to bring people from all over the world together through play," said founder and CEO David Baszucki (via Eurogamer). "Roblox began with just 100 players and a handful of creators who inspired one another, unlocking this groundswell of creativity, collaboration, and imagination that continues to grow."

And today it's 100 million strong.
