25.3 million PS4s sold to date

For a long time, news journos the world over - ourselves included - got to spend our days talking about the "console war," between Microsoft and Sony. It wasn't really. Friends tend to buy what their friends have, but it was still fun to talk up the battles and ever evolving statistics and tactics of the various camps to try and pull in gamers.

Coming up on two years since the release of the two systems though, and it's plain as day: if there was a war, Sony won it by a mile. While Microsoft recently talked up its 11.6 million sold consoles and Nintendo is happy just to have broken through the 10 million mark with its Wii U system - which has had a year longer than the others - Sony has this week announced that it's sold more than 25.3 million of its PS4 system.

This helped take the PlayStation division of Sony, Game and Network services, to a new height of $2.365 billion, a 12.1 per cent rise year on year. Operating profit was around $160 million, which Sony said was partially down to the continued sales of the PS4 console, but was more contributed to by software and peripheral sales.

Despite the strong sales of the PS4 though, Sony declined to mention much about the PS3 or Vita, suggesting that their sales have dropped off considerably in the last year.
