If you thought Activision was going to sit back and let Rockstar take all the glory for the biggest and fastest selling game of all time, you've got another thing coming. Call of Duty Ghosts is just around the corner, and Activision believes it will take the top spot back from GTA V.
Activision UK senior brand manager Kevin Flynn told CVG: "Congratulations to the team at Rockstar for their success. We look forward to getting the record back before the next GTA title."
That's a pretty tough challenge to set yourself there Mr Flynn. We all know CoD is a massive, multi-billion dollar franchise, but it's going to have to go some to make over a billion dollars in three days. GTA V is currently the fastest selling entertainment product of all time, beating out all music and movies ever, on top of every game that came before it.
Can CoD Ghosts do the same thing? I doubt it.
Part of the reason GTA V did so well, is because it isn't a yearly title. When it comes out, it's a big event as we know there won't be another one for a good five years or so.
But it's much more than just a solid franchise, as I pointed out a few weeks ago, as otherwise CoD would have just as much of a chance as GTA did of breaking record numbers. As it stands though, I don't see Ghosts making quite as big a splash.
But what do I know. We'll have to wait and see. Keep your eyes peeled on November 5th, as that's when we'll know. If CoD: Ghosts can make three quarters of a billion in 24 hours, it might be able to topple GTA V, but it's going to be a tough one.
