With so many gamers around the world moving on from their beloved franchises to playing battle royale games like Fortnite BR and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, it's no surprise that a number of developers are looking to get in on the action. That's why we have burgeoning BR titles like SOS and Darwin Project waiting in the wings and now there's a rumor that the next company to start down that road is Activision.
Although this is just rumor for now, the Dow Jones Newswire (via PCGamer) has reported that investment firm, Openheimer, has raised its target price for Activison/Blizzard shares from $70 to $87 and possibly more in the future, on the basis of an upcoming announcement for Overwatch League growth and the success other publishers have had in the Battle Royale space.
While that doesn't implicitly say that Activision is going to make a Battle Royale game, it would make sense for it too at this point. It could even do what it sounds like Valve is doing with CS:GO, leveraging one of its other game franchises to do it.
Call of Duty: Battle Royale anyone?
Overwatch is a possibility too, if it wanted to take the colorful Fortnite approach, but the way the game's abilities are set up it might be a little more difficult to go for those large scale games. Plus, Overwatch is its very much self contained thing. Call of Duty is a little more open in that respect, even if it does have a military slant.
It's also possible that it creates an entirely new franchise to launch a new Battle Royale game in.
What do you think Activision's approach will be?
