AMD's next-generation graphics cards based on its RDNA2 architecture will be more than just a halo product. While Big Navi, the top-tier GPU will be super expensive and powerful, in line with something like Nvidia's RTX 2080 Ti (though likely more powerful) it won't be the only card in the range. AMD has confirmed that RDNA2 will be a full product stack of new cards and will debut before the next-generation consoles later this year.
RDNA2 is just around the corner and will be found in both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X alongside AMD's Zen 2 CPU cores. But before those new-gen systems land in living rooms around the world, they'll also appear in desktop PCs as RDNA2 GPUs. These dedicated graphics cards are designed to compete head to head with Nvidia's new Ampere GPUs.
Based on the 7nm+ EUV node from TSMC, RDNA2 will be a new generation design that builds upon RX 5000 and will make major performance and efficiency improvements. They're going to be fast and they're going to cover everything from the entry-level right through to the top end. This is no Vega generation of cards with just a couple of top tier GPUs, nor will it be a Polaris-style refresh. This is something new and it's going to cover everything.
In a chat at the Bank of America Securities Global Technology Conference, AMD's CFO Devinder Kumar said (via Videocardz) that, "there’s a lot of excitement for Navi 2, or what our fans have dubbed as the Big Navi", which he said was "a halo product" and "enthusiasts love to buy the best, and we are certainly working on giving them the best".
But he also made it clear that "RDNA 2 architecture goes through the entire stack", so there should be something for everyone looking to upgrade their GPU later this year.
