Advance Micro Devices announced two new chips, the XP2400+ and the XP2600+, although consumers will not be able to get them until next month. Except for the shipment of these two new chips AMD also announced new price cuts to their current range of processors.
The XP2400+ will run at 2GHz while the XP2600+ AT 2.133GHz. The move forward in AMD's release schedule was expected since the company realized it was falling too far behind Intel, at least clockwise. With Intel's imminent release of four new P4 desktop processors, peaking at 2.8GHz, AMD had to make a move, especially since during the second quarter of 2002, Intel regained 6 percent of the market share it had lost to AMD. This combination of release and price cuts is a common form of action by manufacturers although AMD's strong point has traditionally been the price cuts. AMD's previous cuts were announced July 26th.
The biggest winner of the price cuts was the XP2200+, which was lowered by 20 percent from USD230 to USD183.
Prices were reduced by between 3 and 12 percent on the rest of its desktop Athlon XP models.
The XP2100+ chip went from USD180 to USD174, the XP2000+ chip from USD163 to USD155, the XP1900+ from USD150 to USD139, the XP1800+ from USD142 to USD130 and the XP1700+ from USD130 to USD114.
