If you like to overclock your graphics cards and don't mind fitting a seriously capable cooling solution, the upcoming RDNA 2 RX 6800 XT GPU can reportedly be very heavily overclocked so that it boosts up to 2.5GHz, leading to performance that is in the ballpark range of not only its bigger brother, the 6900 XT, but also the Nvidia RTX 3090 too — a card that costs $850 more.
The RX 6800 XT is set to debut in just a week's time, so leaks are starting to trickle in with hints of what we can expect. One Twitter user by the name of @OneRaichu (via WCCFTech) reportedly has a 6800 XT for testing and found that is is not only very capable out of the box, but can go far beyond its stock specs with overclocking. Even more impressive, the monster 2.55GHz clock speeds were achieved with a combination of overclocking, power delivery enhancing, and undervolting, leading to a total board power under the 300W the card is rated for.
This suggests that if you like to watercool your graphics card, the 6800 XT could be an absolute monster of a GPU and well worth tweaking instead of the much more expensive 6900 XT and 3090.
This would be comparable to what we saw with both Vega 56/64 and RX 5700 XT cards, where memory, and core clocks could be significantly increased with the right undervolting and power settings. You would have to get lucky with binning, and that may well be the case with the 6800 XT too, but the potential is certainly there for these cards to offer the most compelling performance for those who are willing to tweak them.
