If you want a high-end graphics card, today is the best time in the past two years to do so. The AMD RX 6900XT, what was until recently, a near-$2000 GPU, is now just $700 after the latest round of price cuts. Yes the RTX 4000 series is just around the corner, and yes RDNA 3 is coming just after that, and yes (!) this is just AMD trying to clear old stock, but it's good old stock, and $700 for a 4K GPU is a killer deal in 2022.
Graphics card prices for the past few years have been all over the place. From relatively high launch prices of the RTX 3000 and RX 6000 series, to astronomical prices when crypto mining and global silicon shortages caused GPUs to be impossible to get for well over a year. At one point we saw RX 6000 series GPUs at well over $1,500, and some RTX 3000 cards as high as $3,000. But we're well past that now, and as Nvidia and AMD cut prices ahead of their next-gen launches, the RX 6900 XT is now just $690 at Amazon. Get one now while the stocks last.
Prices have fallen for a lot of AMD GPUs in the past few weeks, with AMD trying to shift its old stock ahead of RDNA3 launches later this year. But it's also capitalizing on Nvidia's failings, in both its inability to bring down RTX 3000 prices by the same levels, and in the outlandish pricing of its RTX 4000 series which launches in the next few days.
The RTX 4090 will be $1600 at launch and likely more than that once the initial stock is quickly bought out. The RX 6900 XT will be roughly half the speed, but that's not bad for well under half the price.
