Following AMD's debut of its RX 480 and RX 470 earlier this month, we now have our first real insight into how they perform. Yes AMD released details that suggested the RX 480 could beat out a GTX 1080 when paired up with a second of its kind, but that was in Ashes of the Singularity, a demo that AMD is known for performing well in.
Now though we have some numbers from 3DMark Firestrike, which may have its own detractors, but is a far more accurate rendition of what real world performance will be like with the card and its RX 470 counterpart too.
The results, grabbed by Videocardz show the RX 480 achieving 5,708 points on Extreme, with a resolution of 1,440P. As pat of its testing it was pitted up against a single GTX 980 from Nvidia, which was able to put out a score of 6,602. The difference was much closer in Ultra, where the GTX 980 only held its lead by 100 points.
In comparison, the GTX 470 was able to achieve 13,100 points when tested at 1080p, showing that that is the resolution AMD has pegged for gamers with this card.
While some gamers may be disappointed to see the RX 480 score significantly less than the Fury X, the fact that the 480 is only priced at $200 is a big difference and makes it one of the most affordable cards out there.
Especially since it outperforms and undercuts the previous generation's R9 390x.
Do these results make you more likely to buy an RX 480 when it launches later this month?
