Amnesia: The Dark Descent is one of the most celebrated horror games in the history of PC gaming, combining great visual and sound design with mind-bending depictions of mental health and some truly horrifying monsters. Its sequels and follow up titles by Frictional games haven't been quite so celebrated, even if they have explored intriguing themes. Amnesia: Rebirth will be the first time that the developer has stepped back into its most celebrated universe in many years and the first look at its gameplay looks as horrifying as you might expect.
Lighting is a big part of the game as it was with its predecessors, making for a dark and foreboding atmosphere. This time, though, it's set 100 years after the original game, meaning technology has come on a bunch and the setting is drastically different.
Instead of lanterns, this time the main character is gifted a box of matches, which allows for the lighting of a very limited number of candles and lamps around the deeply shadowy and fear-inducing interiors of the sand-ridden buildings our protagonist explores.
Indeed the environments are more nuanced than the ones in the Dark Descent, with a lot more items to play with and different settings to enjoy — including outdoors and the interiors of some vehicles.
Amnesia: Rebirth will hit Steam, Epic and GoG stores on October 20.
