There's been a lot of speculation about what the next Assassin's Creed game would be over the past year and a half, as Ubisoft elected to make the unprecedented decision to skip 2016 when it came to releasing the next game, something it hasn't done in years. Since Assassin's Creed II, released in 2009, Ubisoft hasn't gone a year without a new AC game, but it did this time around, presumably to provide a little extra testing and quality assurance to assure that it didn't run into the same kind of problems we saw with Unity.
But that's meant that we're all left guessing. Or at least we would, if we hadn't had so many leaks of the upcoming game over the past year. We've seen leaked screenshots, leaked information from Ubisoft staffers and now a reservation card from Target that tells us for sure that the next game is called Assassin's Creed Origins and that it will be based in Egypt.
The card (thanks AGB) shows a picture of the Pyramids at Giza and the Sphynx, as they were in ancient times, alongside some text that tells us that by pre-ordering the game, this reservation secured the buyer a bonus missions called "secrets of the first pyramids."
We've been told previously that ancient Egypt would be the setting for the game, with a return of boat-based exploration and combat - though ships at that time were not quite as large and impressive as those seen in the piratical years played through in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
Taking more inspiration from Black Flag, Origins is slated to be an open world, explorative title, giving players less immediate direction and more of an emphasis on finding what they want to do through natural exploration of the world.
None of this has been confirmed by Ubisoft yet, but with E3 just around the corner, we can expect to learn a lot more about the game in the coming weeks.
