Asteroids is one of video-gaming's most classic of titles. It was exciting, endless and most importantly, it was addictive enough to get kids of the 80s to put more quarters into the machine. However that sort of game is long dead in terms of popular gaming. You'd be unlikely to see anything from that title resurface today.
Or at least you would think so, as Atari has announced that it's rebooting the game, as a survival MMO.
Set in the far flung future where Mars and the Moon are being readily mined for resources, solar-system prospectors are all searching for somewhere to set up shop. As if entire planets weren't enough space for them though, they're taking to the much, much smaller asteroids of our system to dig up precious minerals and sell them for profit.
Of course other players are trying to do the same as you and will fight you to the death for your materials, so you'll need to construct a base and gun down anyone that tries to steal your claim.
It's not clear at the moment how realistic Atari plans to make the game, so whether the Asteroids will have a near non-existent gravity remains to be seen.
As it stands, all we have is a basic premise and some concept art, but Atari assures us that the game will soon be entering Early Access for those that want to try it out.
