According to a set of test results, published on the inquirer.net, AMD's Athlon FX outperforms Intel's 3.2 GHz offering. Even when taking into account the fact that the tested Intel processor carried a Northwood core, the results still confirm the improvement on AMD's Athlon XP 3200+.
In the Sandra memory test, Athlon FX delivers 5600 MB/s while an Intel Pentium 4 3.2 on Canterwood 875 with DDR 400, delivers 5000MB/s.
In Quake 3 , Intel's favorite, the Athlon FX is just under nine per cent faster on an AMD chip rather than an Intel one.
In Unreal 1024x768, AMD has an 18 per cent lead on its rival.
Intel is 2 per cent faster on 3Dmark03 at 1024x768 than the FX. Pcmark03, an Intel optimized application, gives Intel a five per cent advantage over AMD while Athlon FX's integrated memory controller offered the chip an 18 per cent advantage over its Intel counterpart in the memory score.
Intel still holds the crown in all SSE 2 optimized application and the ones that use HyperThreading. That mainly includes rendering applications, where Intel leads but the FX has certainly narrowed the margin which used to be a veritable abyss.
In 3Dstudio Max, a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz with HT is about 10 per cent faster if you render just one frame but the, more realistic, task of a complete scene took exactly the same time to copmplete in both systems.
