Atlas, the pirate-themed, shared-server MMO from the creators of Ark: Survival Evolved, won't launch for a further two days following an additional delay. Originally planned for a December 19 debut, the game will not not launch into Steam Early Access until December 21.
The announcement came in rather an odd fashion: in the description of a new, extended gameplay trailer video on YouTube. Beneath a lengthy description of what the game is, what players can do in the game, and how it relates to Ark, Studio Wildcard said that, "Ready yer sea legs and leave the landlubbers behind! ATLAS sets sail on STEAM Friday the 21st of December!"
It's clear from the look of the game in these early trailers that it's built on top of the Ark framework. You'll have the same overly muscled, chunky characters, animals, monsters and mythical creatures to ride and tame, melee and ranged combat, vehicles, structures, crafting, and survival elements. It'll all just have a bit of a pirate theme to it.
Atlas will also draw a lot of inspiration from Eve Online, putting up to 40,000 players in the same server to trade with, fight, and explore together.
Another interesting tidbit released in the new trailer is that the dev kit will have mod support. It showcases a prop plane and tank in the game world in the video, suggesting that the possibilities for creating new experiences — like the popular Ark Survival battle royale game — are expansive with Atlas too.
