Battlefield 2142 was one of the more out there shooters that EA has released in the franchise over the past decade, but perhaps that's why it wasn't the most popular. Because of that, two years ago EA officially ended the game's life online, shutting down the servers and ending the chance for gamers to battle each other in that far flung future.
While Call of Duty might be heading back into the future this year, gamers who were fans of Battlefield 2142 would rather bring that back instead, so have launched the BF2142 Revive Project, which is now available for free and to all.
There are online servers and everything, so you'll be able to create an account, pick your class, unlock upgrades and perks for your various weapons, just like you could in the original game.
All maps are present, as well as all vehicles, weapons and game modes. Of course player numbers aren't astronomical, so you may not find a game of your favourite map and mode combination, but there are some decent player numbers online.
At the time of writing there are five servers running, with a total of around 140 players in total, but during weekends when activity is at its peak, we've seen numbers north of 1,100 people online, so there are times when you can play the game like it was in its hay day.
I will definitely be checking this out. BF2142 and CoD World at War were the last two shooters I really invested any time in. I'm definitely down for taking down some Titans.
