Below, the stylish roguelike dungeon crawler that first made its appearance in 2013 but was indefinitely put on hold in 2016, might actually be released after all. Although we don't have any firm sort of release date, there is some suggestion that its development is back on and that the people who originally worked on it haven't been sitting idle since it was canned.
Supposedly, the original stopping point was not because the game was cancelled, or ran out of money, but because the developers realized that for all of the polished experience they had, it needed a lot more work under the hood and they have been beavering away at it since then.
"Instead of giving you a new, loose release window, we will be going dark while we take the time that we need to complete Below without compromise," the studio explained (via PCGamer). "The next time you see a major Below update, that means our game has a firm release date, which we’ll share."
Despite pledges of no release window, there is some suggestion that Below will make it out this year. That's what the creative director, Kris Piotrwoski said anyhow -- that the company was aiming to have the game done this side of the new year. Take that as you will, but it suggests that Below development is continuing at a pace and isn't too far from being finished.
It's been a few years, but are you guys still intrigued by the haunting bleakness of early below demos?
