Black Myth: Wukong isn't just the current game of the moment, it's also looking likely to become of the one fastest selling games of all time, having leap-frogged some massive games' sales numbers in just a week.
News in brief:
- Black Myth: Wukong's sales numbers are out, and the results are staggering
- Game has leap-frogged Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, and other huge games
- Huge popularity in China is likely the biggest reason for sales numbers
After a week of huge amounts of publicity, Black Myth: Wukong's first week of sales have been revealed, and it's sitting pretty on an enormous 10 million sales. For some context, as you may not be the sort of person who regularly trawls sales lists, these are pretty out-there numbers. Baldur's Gate 3, touted by many as the best game of the decade, achieved over 20 million sales in five months. Cyberpunk 2077, a hugely anticipated game, reached 13.7 million in a month. Even the mighty Elden Ring, member of one of the biggest recent game franchises, only achieved 13 million sales in one month.
It's a huge win for Black Myth: Wukong, and a well deserved one by most accounts. While some reviews have been negative, most reviews are broadly positive. It's also worth pointing out that some element of this popularity likely comes down to the game's reception in developer Game Science's home country of China. The game is based around the legend of Son Goku, the Monkey King of Chinese myth, and it is unsurprising to see a game based around Chinese legends doing so well in China. This has been confirmed by the large drop in player numbers outside of usual playing hours in China, but really, that doesn't matter. Whether a game is popular on one side of the globe or not isn't really relevant, and the global buzz has certainly made the game more appealing to those who might not otherwise have considered it.
While some have reacted against the label of Souls-like for the game, by most accounts the game is a challenging one, so make sure to gird yourself before taking up the mantle of the Monkey King.
