Bungie has had a number of flagship projects over the years. Although it had a number of decent games in the 90s, its big breakout hit was Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001 and it remained with that franchise through its various incarnations for a number of years. When it finally moved on from Master Chief, it started up the Destiny franchise which has been its major project in the years since. Now, it's purportedly looking to its next big one and thanks to a new trademark filing, we might know what it's called.
The new trademark is for something called "Matter," which the filing claims is a "computer game software," so we know this isn't something outside of Bungie's usual wheelhouse. It features online connectivity, but that could relate to either digital distribution, DLC, or multiplayer, so that doesn't tell us much. It does have a filing as part of an "online entertainment services" categorization though, so it may be a little more than just your typical game -- potentially involving user customizable uploads in some fashion.
Other than that, all we have to go in is a logo and some hints from Eurogamer about an investment of as much as $100 million in Bungie from Chinese publisher, NetEase. That company operates Blizzard games like WoW, StarCraft 2, and Overwatch in China, so it may be that Bungie's next big project will look to take advantage of the enormous and enormously lucrative, Chinese market.
What do you think Matter will be about?
