Speaking to USA Today, John Carmack finally explained why he left id Software to work as Oculus chief technology officer.
Believing that virtual reality is poised for prime time, Carmack tried to broker a deal between Oculus VR and ZeniMax Media, the parent company of id Software to have the games he work on support Oculus Rift.
Carmack wanted to have Wolfenstein: The New Order and Doom4 support the virtual reality headset. "It would have been a huge win," he said. "It seemed like a sensible plan for me."
Had that agreement gone through, Carmack wouldn't have had to leave id Software. "I would have been content probably staying there working with the people and technology that I know and the work we were doing," he acknowledged.
"But they couldn't come together on that which made me really sad. It was just unfortunate," added Carmack . "When it became clear that I wasn't going to have the opportunity to do any work on VR while at id software, I decided to not renew my contract."
