During his keynote at QuakeCon, John Carmack affirmed that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are "essentially the same."
"I haven't done really rigorous benchmarking [but] they're very close and they're both very good,"he said.
John Carmack is an American game programmer and the co-founder of id Software. Carmack was the lead programmer of the id video games Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Rage and their sequels. Carmack is best known for his work on Quake graphics engines.
And the similarity doesn’t stop at hardware. In fact, according to Carmack Sony has "made huge strides" towards making PS4’s development tools as developer-friendly as Xbox tools.
As for Xbox One, Carmack believes that the cynicism towards Microsoft’s pre-owned games policies and always-on Kinect 2 is "a bit on the side of a witch hunt." However, the id Software co-founder is not a fan of Kinect which he describes as "sort of like a zero-button mouse with a lot of latency."
"Kinect still has some fundamental limitations with the latency and framerate" he asserted. "It's fundamentally a poor interaction."
