As much as online gaming streamers might have developed sizeable audiences of their own, with the likes of Dr. Disrespect dominating concurrent streaming records on various platforms, it turns out that that's nothing when compared with the power of more mainstream celebrities. When Drake recently joined Fortnite streamer Ninja, on Twitch, they destroyed the previous streaming record and pulled in more than 600,000 concurrent viewers during the game.
To add some clarification to those numbers, they are for a single stream. The numbers seen for big streams of major Esports events have been in the millions, but this was for a single, uninterrupted stream and it drew so much attention that other internet entities and celebrities joined in as time went on.
Ninja is a major Fortnite streamer, regularly drawing in decent audiences of his own. When Drake followed him, he was able to set up a game with the pair of them, quickly drawing in 200,000 viewers once voice comms were initialized. It didn't stop there though, growing to three times that much by the time it hit its peak.
Throughout the game original MegaUpload founder and competitive gamer in his own right, Kim Dotcom, joined the stream, followed by rapper Travis Scott -- making for quite the celebrity squad by the time they were done.
For what it's worth, Drake wasn't even half bad. According to Kotaku's break down, he's only been playing for about a month and tends to play during downtime when in the recording studio.
