It turns out battle royale modes attract cheaters, no matter what game it's being played in. Fortnite, the game that wasn't really about battle royale play but has since been converted into it following the success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, has a cheating problem of its own, but Epic has countered it with a big ban wave that saw thousands lose access to the game that now millions around the world enjoy.
In a post discussing the problem (via PCG), Epic Games said that cracking down on cheats was of the "highest priority" because ultimately cheats and hackers ruined the experience for others.
Community leader, Nathan Mooney even highlighted what some of the cheaters have been capable as of late, pointing a finger at aim-bot users most of all. Regardless of how common the cheating is though, Epic is looking to shut it down.
"We are constantly working against both the cheaters themselves and the cheat providers," he said. "And it’s ongoing, we’re exploring every measure to ensure these cheaters are removed and stay removed from Fortnite Battle Royale and the Epic ecosystem. We don’t want to give too many clues about what we’re doing, but we are rolling out tools and will continue to do so. Thousands have been banned and we have no plans to stop!"
One method that Mooney hopes will help deter cheaters - on top of existing ban threats - is a progression system. If you've spent all of that time unlocking gear and privileges of long play, you don't necessarily want to risk that by cheating, even once.
