As if having a third High Definition format was not enough, the Chinese have decided to adopt their own CH-DVD format.
CH-DVD stands for "China High Definition DVD". It was developed by the Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC), a laboratory dedicated to optical disc research at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
The development and realization of CH-DVD technology is supported by the Chinese government who says that the new format adopts an "advanced copy protection technology" which -they hope- will help reduce piracy.
CH-DVD is based on HD-DVD and its blue-violet laser technology. Combining the scale and low cost of production of Chinese industry with blue laser manufacturing might end up reducing both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray prices.
