Cliff Blezinski, Unreal Tournament alumni and founding gather of the Gears of War series, has been out of gaming for some time now, having bailed on the industry in a similar manner to Fez creator Phil Fish - though with slightly less digital screaming - after growing tired of the industry. Now though he's talking about coming back and he wants to make what he describes as a "proper," arena shooter.
The announcement was made during an episode of the DeathSquad podcast, where he said that he was looking to make a new shooter. When pressed for more, he said it would be first person, because that's what he knows, but not a modern shooter, a proper old school one.
"It's one of those things," he said. "A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty, I don't think they'd know what a proper arena shooter is if it'd hit them across the f****** head."
He's apparently fairly well along with pre-production of the game too, with concept art, and pitch ready to go, he just needs to secure funding. But he's not interested in going the crowd funding route, he wants to do it the traditional way.
"I don't want to do a Kickstarter. I've shown it to various parties, and there are nibbles... I wanna do something. It's just I'm not gonna do it if the time is not right and if the funding's not right."
What do you guys reckon? Would you like to see a new arena shooter with power ups, pick ups and speed, instead of the CoD style shooters of today with mountains of unlocks?
Thanks CVG.
