The man behind the game that helped popularise the cooperative shooter platform, as well as endless loot collection, Matthew Armstrong, has left Gearbox Games. It's not clear yet what that may mean, but from a tweet sent out by Armstrong it seems to have been an amicable split and he appears excited for what comes next.
Perhaps he'll be setting up his own studio like so many veteran developers have done in recent years.
"Things changed. No longer working at @GearboxSoftware. I will always love Gearbox, but it's adventure time," he said.
As VG247 points out, this is quite a good time for a departure since the last major elements of Borderlands: The Pre-sequel have now been released, so he won't be leaving any big projects from Pandora unfinished.
What is interesting to note however is that Borderlands 3 is in development, so for the first time in the series Armstrong won't have a strong hand on its developmental direction.
Do you guys think that means the next Borderlands game is going to be pretty different from the ones that went before, or has Gearbox got the formula down enough that it will work out ok?
