Senator Leland Yee has been campaigning against violent video games for some time, claiming that they harm children and encourage violence. He's also been a big proponent of stricter gun control laws, as that too can breed violence he claims.
Whether you agree with him or not, you could perhaps admire his conviction, but no more as it turns out Mr Yee was double dealing under the table. While on one hand he campaigned to protect the world from gun violence, on the other he was smuggling them. Yee has been convicted of gun running, racketeering and a number of other charges, landing him with a $250,000 fine (plus restitution for any victims) and 20 years in jail, which for the 67 year old is about as close to a death sentence as you can get.
Originally arrested back in 2014, Senator Yee was picked up in an FBI operation that also netted 25 other alleged criminals. One of those arrested was Yee's assistant, who was caught up in trying to bribe FBI agents to perform certain official functions - the suggestion is that it was on the orders of Mr Yee that he did so.
Despite the charges and eventual sentencing, Yee is said to have "a venal attitude toward his position as an elected public official," and had little interest in seeing it performed to his full capacity.
