Cuphead, the retro-animated bullet hell shooter from Studio MDHR, is getting an animated TV show adaptation for Netflix. Titled "The Cuphead Show," the series will feature the two protagonists from the game, as well as many of the characters players have come to love from the fiendishly difficult game that took years to develop, but has since become an indie darling on so many platforms.
The show will expand on what we've learned so far about Cuphead (no spoilers to follow, don't worry) and will look to emulate the classic, 1930s, Fleischer art-style that the game is so well known for. Both of the game's original developers, Char and Jaren Moldenhauer, will be Executive Producers on the show, with industry veteran CJ Kettler joining them. She's most well known for the recent 2019 adaptation of Carmen Sandiago, as well as the 90s iterations of The Tick, The Mask, and My Little Pony.
The story will follow Cuphead's adventures as he drags his poor brother, Mugman into all sorts of wacky adventures, likely culminating in dangerous brawls with some of the heavily stylized enemies of their world of the Inkwell Isles.
The Cuphead Show has backing from King Features, a company that's most well known in recent years for its backing of major toy franchises. It helped popularize the Funko Pop phenomenon, and has also provide figures for McFarlane Toys, Dark Horse Comics, and Elope, among others.
Expect some physical spin offs from this show if it proves popular.
