DOOM is the fourth game in the series and a bit of a reboot numerically. It looks very pretty, albeit a little slower than the traditional experiences. The developers however are very pleased with the direction they've taken it in and in a recent interview with metro, executive producers Marty Stratom described the game as being very vertical compared to Doom games of yesteryear.
At one point he even describes them as being similar to a skate park.
"You do have to get into these expansive tracts, these big spaces, to really let the player have that level of fun," he said.
"And even there we’ve kind of added a level of verticality to our game. We’ve added double jump mechanics and mantling that gets you up really, really fast."
The idea, he said, was to give players new options compared to the corridor shooter mechanics of Doom games of the past. Instead, players won't just have the option of going in guns blazing through the front door. In DOOM, they can get some height on their enemies first and rain down death from above.
"We refer to these arenas almost like skate parks, where you’re just going in and you’re improvising your way through this combat dance with the enemies. You can go back and play it over and over," he said.
DOOM is set for release in some time next year on PC, Xbox One and PS4. Expect more details at the upcoming QuakeCon.
