Doom reboot will hit 1080p, 60FPS on all consoles

Although this latest generation of consoles is certainly much more powerful than what came before, they were never as impressive as people hoped. Indeed years on from their release we still have many AAA games limited to 30FPS, especially on the Xbox One and not hitting 1080p is hardly worth a headline any more.

Still, it's good to hear that some developers have been able to make it work. According to Bethesda, its upcoming reboot of the classic Doom franchise, will come with full 1080p resolution support on both major consoles and will hit a steady 60 frames per second too.

"We want players to wonder how DOOM and idTech 6 games can be so visually stunning at 60 frames-per-second at 1080p on all platforms, when other titles cannot even achieve a similar look at 30 frames-per-second," lead project programmer Billy Khan said on the Bethesda blog.

"Our goal is to be the best-looking game at 1080p at 60fps."

While you might speculate that DOOM won't be as good looking as some games, and that that's why it is able to hit such frame rates at what is now the standard, if somewhat lower-end of PC gaming resolutions, but that's not true. Indeed it's more to do with how efficient the new idTech 6 engine is.

It supports many modern graphical features but handles blocking and texture optimisation in a way that makes it perfectly possible to hit those frame rates.

DOOM is set for release on May 13 on PS4 and Xbox One.
