When Sony saw Microsoft buy Minecraft and its parent company Mojang, it had to know that it had missed a big opportunity. The blocky, building, survival title has racked up tens of millions of buys over the past few years and has been a darling with young and old alike, spawning Youtube careers, and making one Swede particularly wealthy.
Although the game has been available on Sony consoles for a long time already, future versions or updates could be Microsoft system (Xbox and PC) exclusives, so going in its own direction isn't a bad plan for Sony.
Which is exactly what it seems to be doing with a title called Dragon Quest: Builders. It features a block based world made of different materials like grass, rock, sand, dirt and minerals, and has cartoony characters and dragons.
That's about all we know at the moment, since the only information comes from the Square Enix website for it, along with a screenshot showing a Link-like character looking out over a cube world with some mythical beasts stomping around the landscape.
The game is said to be supported by the PS4, PS3 and PSVita, so the visuals shouldn't be too taxing, but that was always the idea with Minecraft and its other clones too.
The question is, is this too little too late for Sony and Square? Do they stand a change of making an impact when Minecraft has been bought and played by those who love it for years already?
