AMD Is determined to rain on every single Intel parade. About a month after the release of the 1.1 GHz Celeron AMD has released it's own 1.1 GHz economy processor. As can be expected, the new chip has already sparked interest in the, now officially ailing, PC market.
Like it's predecessor, the new Duron is based on the Morgan core which means it can now utilize data prefetch and SSE instructions.
What this means in practice, is that the new chip is much faster than the Celeron 1.1 GHz and in many of the benchmark tests its performance has even approached that of the Athlon 1GHz.
So yet again it seems that AMD has managed to beat Intel at producing a faster yet cheaper processor. With news of Gateway following IBM and dropping AMD CPU's from their line - up, this Duron provides a much needed cushion to AMD's expected fall this quarter.
