We'll need to wait until the release of EA Sports' new UFC title to know if it's any good, as with any fighting game, the proof is in the pounding, but we can at least appreciate the effort that has gone into the new game in terms of its visuals. It's very pretty, even if you aren't playing with a female fighter.
The new trailer claims right off the bat that this is all in-game footage and most of it does look that way, though I wouldn't be surprised if occasionally there wasn't a bit of after-effects being added to the mix.
However much of it does look real-time and impressive. The fighters are very well detailed, making it a doddle to pick out your favourite and with the impressive facial animations, there's a real character to each of the combatants - they don't just look like a fresh coat of skin stretched over the same fighter as some fighters have in the past.
In terms of gameplay, it's all still relatively under wraps, but we know that the striking system is a little more traditional fighter than it was in the past, with face buttons handling all of the attacks. However on the ground, there's more of a guessing game, with the defender attempting to escape by rotating the stick one way and if the person in a dominant position guesses it, they block it or lock in a submission - if they don't the defender escapes or transitions.
The ground game was always difficult to simulate on a controller, so it'll be interesting to see how EA has handled it in this upcoming release.
Expect EA Sports UFC to land sometime this Spring.
