As another financial quarter draws to a close in 2017, financial reports from many of the world's biggest technology and gaming companies are now being released and EA Games is no different. In its report we learn that it made most of its money from digital sales, representing some 63 percent of its total revenue. Its net cash was $176 million for the quarter, with several of its biggest franchises helping it make such solid earnings.
Battlefield 1 had more than 21 million players throughout the quarter, suggesting a very strong ecosystem for the game's future and that it continues to pull in new sales as it heads towards its one year anniversary in October. No doubt additional DLC releases help there.
Other standout franchises like Fifa 17 continue to increase in popularity, with the Ultimate Team mode in particular seeing an 11 percent increase in unique player population over this time last year. Likewise the PC version of the Sims 4 has 20 percent more active players now than it did in 2016. That's even more impressive considering that particular title - while only now set to arrive on consoles later this year - was originally released in 2014.
On smartphones, EA's Fifa Mobile title now reaches a unique player base of 95 million, while the NBA Live Mobile app has picked up some 70 million users since the debut of its first season.
Looking forward to the end of the Fiscal year 2018, EA expects to pull in over $5 billion in net revenue, with its online enabled games raking in a further $25 million themselves. However, as is common in large corporations, the company is maintaining a cautious outlook on the whole year, suggesting that it could see a net loss of around $57 million, partially because of planned acquisitions and stock based compensation.
