Epic Games has purchased Psyonix, the developer of Rocket League, for an undisclosed sum. That means it takes all of the company's assets, including the Rocket League property. Initially it was announced that along with the purchase Epic would be removing the popular competitive and casual sports title from Steam entirely, but that has now changed, with Epic suggesting that it was evaluating what it would do with the game and where it would be able to be purchased from in the future.
Psyonix has got out in front of this news to try and calm concerns over the Rocket League experience changing for new and existing players, claiming that it sees this move as only a positive one, not only for themselves, but for the wider Rocket League community.
"Rocket League always has been and always will be a community-driven game, and now that we have joined forces with Epic, we will be able to serve our community in even bigger and better ways!" it said in a statement.
What did concern players though, was an initial announcement that towards the end of this year, new gamers would not be able to buy the game on Steam as it moved to become an Epic Store exclusive. That does appear to now have changed, with Epic Games claiming that it was still evaluating whether that would be the case or not.
In the meantime though, nothing much of anything will be different. Psyonix is still promising the same regular updates to the game, with new cosmetics, maps, and cars planned for the near and far future. The Esports focus of the game will also continue, with new competitions and tournaments coming down the pipeline.
The Psyonix purchase will complete sometime towards the end of May, or early June.
