Esports are a growing, worldwide phenomenon. As much as the UFC might like to paint itself as the fastest growing sport in the world, you easily argue that professional gaming eclipsed it long ago and continues to expand at a greater rate. With tens of millions of people watching the League of Legends World Championship finals last year, it's no joke.
But for those not in the know it is. Take Colin Cowherd, host of The Herd radio on ESPN's radio channel. He doesn't appreciate the scale or scope of Esports and recently said that if he were ever asked to cover a game involving digital athletes, he'd quit on the spot.
"If ESPN ever forced me to cover that, or do play-by-play, I would quit," Cowherd said (via TweakTown). "Somebody lock the basement door at mom's house, and don't let 'em out. I will quit this network if I am ever asked to cover that."
This statement came from the fact that over the weekend ESPN2 covered some of the action from Heroes of the Dorm, a Heroes of the Storm college competition that saw gamers compete against one another to win a sporting scholarship based on their MOBA skills.
It was ultimately won by a team out of UC Berkeley, the Golden Bears, who took home the grand prize of free tuition during the rest of their time at university - quite a life changing reward.
More impressively perhaps, Heroes of the Storm isn't even out yet. Its open beta begins in late May, with June 2nd given as the intended launch date.
