As much as mods can make a game last a lot longer in the hearts of gamers than those that don't, when you're building an esport it is perhaps better to lump everyone together with just a single game mode so that you don't fracture your player base before it can grow. That's proving to not be a problem for DotA 2, which is consistently one of the most well played games in the world.
And that's with a number of modded games available.
One of the new ones is called Epic Boss Fight and it does what it says on the tin. Players have to band together to take on increasingly larger bosses, which eventually reach a size that will see them breaking through the frame itself, standing taller than can even fit onto the screen.
As it stands, the creator has faced some criticism that the mod needs balancing, with some bosses considered too difficult and others too easy with certain champion choices, but still, it's proving surprisingly popular for an experience that is counter to the usual DotA playstyle of pitting teams against one another.
