Fortnite encourages in-game politeness with thank the driver

As much as thanking the bus driver might be a silly meme in more ways than one, it's also proving to be an interesting psychological experiment in the insanely popular Battle Royale title, Fortnite. Following the success of a change.org petition encouraging Epic to add the feature into the game, players can now thank the bus driver on their way out to drop into mayhem.

The latest patch for the game introduces a lot to Fortnite. Updating the game to V5.3, it adds new items and game modes, the Risky Reels drive-in now features an actual movie you can sit and watch if you don't mind risking being shot in the process, and a tomato 'temple' that has replaced Tomato Town. It's great for loot and makes for quite a focal point on the map, so expect to get into some serious brawls around and inside it.

For many though, the biggest feature in this update is the ability to thank the bus driver before you drop. Often considered a point of courtesy in the real world, being able to say thank you to the bus driver in-game is something that was requested for a surprisingly long time. Now you can do so in game by opening up the emote menu before you jump.

It will be interesting to see if this goes any way to helping curb toxicity in Fortnite. Probably not, but by starting off the game on the right foot, it may be that we some more polite battle royale games moving forward.
