Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., better known as Foxconn will join ASUSTeK in producing Playstation 3 units for Sony who has set a shipment goal of 10 million PS3 consoles for the first quarter of 2008.
Since Sony launched PS3 consoles in the fourth quarter of last year, ASUSTeK has been Sony's sole supplier of the products. Playstation 3's high price caused ASUSTeK's profits to fall to NT$136.7 billion for the second quarter from NT$222.5 billion posted in the first quarter.
Foxconn manufactures Xbox 360 components for Microsoft and Wii parts for Nintendo. Foxconn already are manufacturing Playstation 2 for Sony. Analysts believe that Sony has reached out for Foxconn in order to reduce Playstation 3 cost and - consequently - price.
