One of the biggest shake ups to PC gaming in the past few months, was the announcement that GameSpy would be shutting down. While far from popular as a method of online gaming, GameSpy has been a service that connected gamers for well over a decade, but now its not long for this world. Fortunately the guys at Revora and GameReplays have put together C&C: Online, which means all GameSpy equipped Command and Conquer games will continue to have full multiplayer functionality going forward.
That means that in the future, CnC Generals, Zero Hour, C&C 3 Tiberium Wars, Kane's Wrath and Red Alert 3 will all still be playable online. Based on the T3A: Online project that was initially created for Battle for Middle Earth, the system will now be able to play CnC games too.
"C&C:Online lets you use the game's native online interface, exactly like you are used to now (no LAN). It works by using a simple launcher that redirects traffic to our server. In order to participate in the new service, you will need to download the C&C:Online launcher for your game(s) and create an account at Revora. Your Revora account name is then synchronised to be your new "EA" account name. Don't worry, you will still be able to choose different nicknames."
While there is no confirmed release date as of yet, the developers claim that it's "coming soon," and will launch with the ability to play, host and join games, as well as providing chat functions and a buddy system. In the future, as features are added, it will also support stat-tracking, ranking systems, an automatch function and potentially ladders too.
