GameTap which started in October 2005 with 300 has tripled that amount now and plans to offer it for free.
According to GameTap general manager Stu Snyder, GameTap is planning to offer three levels of service. Anonymous users will be able to download GameTap ad-supported games for free and play them without Multiplayer. A simple (and free) registration moves the user to the Green level where games will have multiplayer and other community features available. Advertisements will be displayed Before and After playing a free game, wither registered or not. The third level is the normal $9.99 a month Subscriber status that current GameTap users know and love.
But not all 800+ GameTap titles will be available for free download at once. Instead, there will be a weekly and monthly rotation of around 30 titles for non-paying users.
Users will be able to switch back-and-forth between free and paid memberships on a month-to-month basis if they choose.
The free services will start on May 31st.
