Gearbox's free to play MOBA/Shooter mashup, Battleborn, is soon set to receive its final update. Combined with ever-increasing pressure from Overwatch and a saturated market of competitive multiplayer games with a cartoonish look, Battleborn just hasn't been able to secure the audience it requires for healthy long-term growth. The game won't be shutting down, but it won't be updated far into the future.
"As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update. Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on," said Battleborn creative director, Randy Varnell, on the official Gearbox forum (via Kotaku).
He did confirm that the game would be available for the "foreseeable future," and that the Fall Update was still planned as it was originally announced. That means the introduction of new skins, Finisher Boosts and Taunts when that debuts. Now though, we know it will be the last update the game ever receives.
If that's sad news for you, then know that it's just as said for Varnell himself. In his release, he explains that he's been working on the game exclusively since 2012 and in some cases, on different aspects of the game since 2009.
"It’s been a long labor of love with many of my good friends at Gearbox, and I’m proud to have shared that journey with you, our community," he said. "Your spirit and loyalty have been a constant inspiration to the team at Gearbox."
He also issued personal thanks to everyone and anyone who played Battleborn at some point in time, helping to bring its new universe to life.
While that was a reasonable number of people though, it wasn't enough to maintain a healthy game and that's why Gearbox is refocusing its efforts. The latest news is that it has a brand new game in the works that is "highly anticipated." That project remains murky for now, but for Battleborn at least, the future is certain and it's sealed.
