The PAL version of Mega Drive game, , which was never properly released, has shown up on Ebay and at the time of writing this exceedingly rare collectable title has reached more than $10,000 in bids. The game is thought to be one of 13 prints of the original game and this one is in mint condition with the packaging - it's a very rare find and the owner stands to make a killing on the sale.
This game is just one of many and was originally part of a job lot, but when a number of collector's offered hundreds of pounds for the entire batch and showed particular interest in the sporting titles, the seller cottonned on that something in the box may have been worth a little more than usual. Ultimately they discovered that the Lakers versus Celtics game was such a rare find, that it had to be sold individually.
And now it's going to net the seller thousands of pounds.
But why is that particular game so expensive? The seller, who used to work at EA during the late '80s and early '90s, was friends with an executive - who he is selling the games on behalf of - who gave up some more details on the game. Reportedly a licensing issue prevented EA from calling the game Lakers vs Celtics in Europe, which is why the PAL version is much rarer than the U.S. rendition.
While the game did see a few sales, somehow - 192 reportedly left the warehouse, but only 12 copies have surfaced so far - it was ultimately held off for a year, where the game became Bulls vs Lakers, for the next-year's audience (thanks Eurogamer).
To celebrate the impressive sale, the seller has promised to buy his helper of a son a Nintendo Switch. Considering how much this game looks set to go for, he should have a lot of change.
