Since Overwatch showed how successful a character-driven, team-based shooter with colorful graphics and a tongue-in-cheek style could be, there have been a few imitators to appear. While that blending of MOBA and shooter isn't too uncommon today though, that doesn't mean others aren't still going to try and sneak a slice of the market and that's exactly what Gigantic is going to try and do when it launches next month.
Developed by independent studio, Motiga, Gigantic offers similar gameplay to titles like Overwatch, with a slightly different spin on things. While you will be fighting it out in objective-based maps with various colorful characters with different stats and abilities, Gigantic is all about building up to the big release of your Guardian, which then marches across the map, terraforming it to your liking and attacking the enemy itself.
It takes the idea of protecting your base from MOBA and capture the flag scenarios, and makes it a mobile platform of death, forcing a climactic confrontation at the end of each round as the teams try to whittle down their enemy, while bolstering their own Guardian's ability to do damage.
The whole game has an eye catching cell-shaded art style, which could help the game stand out, even among its contemporaries.
Another aspect that should help the game stand apart though, is its free to play price tag. Unlike Overwatch, anyone can jump in and play Gigantic for free. It's set to become available for everyone starting July 20.
If you'd like to try it out now, there's an ongoing open beta too.
