After a GoldenEye fan remade the game using Far Cry 5 assets in almost its entirety — they just had a couple of bonus levels to go — MGM, the parent company that owns the James Bond IP, forced Ubisoft to pull the modification and levels from all platforms. Fortunately, because it's just an issue of the name, the developer of the remake is going to reupload everything. Under a new — wink wink — name.
GoldenEye is considered by many to be one of the best first person shooters ever made, and one of the top five N64 games ever released too. It had pioneering level design, shooter mechanics, and mixed a solid single and multiplayer experience together in a way that was very rarely managed, even today. Nintendo and MGM have refused to bring it back in any kind of remastered guise, though, despite the sheer amount of interest in it. Fans have taken that upon themselves, and the GoldnEye Fan-Remake was born.
Painstakingly recrafted over three years of work, YouTube modder, KrollyWood, made every level in the game, bar a couple of hidden ones, and it looks fantastic. Both gorgeously recreated, and taking advantage of the modern lighting and visual effects of the Far Cry 5 engine, GoldenEye looks better than ever. Unfortunately, Ubisoft was made to remove it due to a copyright claim from James Bond IP owner, MGM. To get around that, KrollyWood has said that they will be re-uploading everything they've made, but without the James Bond name.
That will hopefully get around this problem, but if and when it re-appears, if you want to play it, grab it while you can, in case it gets struck down again.
