HardOCP chief editor revealed that AMD and Intel have signed a deal so that Intel would use AMD's Radeon GPU technology in its own chips.
"The licensing deal between AMD and Intel is signed and done for putting AMD GPU tech into Intel's iGPU," Kyle Bennett. Bennet has been around the industry for decades and he has excellent sources in both of Intel and AMD, which lends credence to his claims.
In analyzing Bennett's claims, Forbes' Kevin Krewell noted that Intel cannot operate in the GPU market without a cross-licensing deal with one of the two key players, AMD and NVidia. Intel already has one such agreement with NVidia but it is set to expire in May 2017, giving Intel room to replace it with AMD's. Intel currently pays NVidia $200 million annually for the cross-licensing rights and if that money switched direction to AMD it would mean a lot to the cash-strapped giant.
A more interesting - and disruptive - scenario would be for Intel to follow Bennett's claims to the letter and use AMD's graphics technology in its integrated graphics chips. But that would mean that they would be tying an important part of their portfolio to their arch rival.
