Nostalgic gamers can easily download all the classic games they want from any app store, but there is one aspect of classic gaming which hasn't been reproduced yet: carrying around a handful of game cartridges to start your games and keep your save data.

This might finally change if Japanese startup, Beatrobo, had its way. The company is currently in the process of launching "Pico Cassette," a game cartridge that plugs into headphone jacks. Pico Cassette won't actually hold the game itself though. Instead, it will transmit an inaudible tone which unlocks downloaded content. The technology also keeps track of your save games and syncs them across devices.

By synching with Beatrobo servers, Pico Cassette would allow its owners to play their games on multiple devices while maintaining their progress simply by plugging the modern cartridge into the device they wish to use.

Pico Cassette is still in prototype phase and Beatrobo is currently talking to content partners to get it off the ground through a crowdfunding effort.
