Since 1991, John Carmack and id Software have been synonymous. For better or for worse, this is no longer true as the famous graphics and game programmer has officially quit his job as id Software Lead Programmer.
"John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," said id studio director Tim Willits.
For the last five years, John used to split his time between id Software and his aerospace startup company, Armadillo Aerospace. Additionally, he became Oculus Rift's CTO last August. At the time he tweeted that his "time division is now Oculus over Id over Armadillo. Busy busy busy!"
"John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects," noted Willits. "We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well."
