Even though DotA 2, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Smite, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, Rocket League, Starcraft II and more, all offer competition to League of Legends in the Esports arena, the Riot controlled MOBA is still the most popular of them all by a long, long way. In a recent interview, the developers of the game announced that the MOBA now has more than 100 million active players every single month.
That's quite an amazing feat considering it was only two years ago when Riot announced that it had achieved 67 million monthly users, an amazing goal at the time. However since no figures were announced since then, it was presumed that the player numbers may have stagnated or even fallen, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
With such a strong player base, Riot is able to earn more than $1.4 billion a year from League of Legends alone, which is an amazing achievement for a free to play game. It's not quite as high earning as the likes of World of Warcraft in its day, which at its peak was bringing in close to $200 million a month - but that was a subscription game.
Riot is not complacent though, it admits that it would only take a stronger game to come along and capture the imaginations of its fanbase - Overwatch is perhaps the latest attempt in a long run of games looking to take a shot at the king.
While that one doesn't seem likely to steal the top spot just yet, Riot plans to continue learning and improving its game into the future and as long as it doesn't slip up in a major way, it seems hard to imagine it falling from grace any time soon.
